Once one of the youngest captains in the Kul Tiran navy, Gerhardt Grumblegale was shipwrecked off the coast of Pandaria and rescued by a wandering monk. The kindly monk took him to a nearby monastery which granted him succor while he recovered. Once his strength had returned and there was still no sign of other survivors or a rescue ship from his homeland, Gerhardt remained at the monastery and began training. It was here that the children in the nearby village granted him his moniker, "Jiichan" on account of his silver hair and young age.
